If you’ve ever eaten our Colorado-style pizza, you know we’re known for serving honey with our pizza. But did you know we use honey inside our dough, too?

It’s true!

For decades, Beau Jo’s Colorado Style Pizza has been dedicated to purchasing honey from local Colorado honey farms as we believe it’s Mother Nature’s perfect natural sweetener for our legendary crust. It wasn’t until a Beau Jo’s family member dipped their legendary mountain pie in some extra honey that the famous honey jar appeared on every table – along with some extra napkins, of course!

We’ve partnered with the THRIVE Initiative to help study local hive health and repopulate bees across Colorado. While most of us understand bees as those black-and- yellow flying insects with stingers, it’s important to understand their critical importance our environment:

  • 1 in 3 bites of your food comes from a bee pollinated plant.
  • 80% of flowering plants depend on bee pollination.
  • 45% of U.S. bee colonies have died off in the last 35 years.

But it doesn’t stop there. Did you know that honey bees have existed for millions of years? Ancient Egyptians actually paid their taxes in honey!

In addition to what we’ve already shared, these are our top five favorite facts about honey bees:

  1. They are the only insects that produce food eaten by man.
  2. They can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 MPH.
  3. The average honey bee visits 50-100 flowers during one collection trip.
  4. Only worker bees sting, and only if they feel threatened. (They die once they sting.)
  5. Honey bees communicate with each other by dancing.

And just as bees are so vital to the production of honey, honey itself is so important to Beau Jo’s pizza!
